Alongside eradication of child labour it is important that mothers
are empowered by training them with certain tasks. Cluster-level
meetings were held to identify villages where centres could be
set up and women can join. Identified women are given skilled
training in carpet weaving to help them further the craft as well
as help them earn some extra money.
They also received basic training in enterprise management including
accounting, inventory control and marketing. The centre also helps
establish links with established buyers and the Carpet Export
Promotion Council for marketing of carpets. Women feel more confident
and empowered after interacting with established loom owners to
help them understand the craft.
This programme helps keep children out of looms and in schools
while the mothers/ women themselves receive training in childcare
and pre-primary education at the durrie weaving centres.
Core team members of the district, block and village level monitor
the progress of the project and gave need-based guidance and training.
