Health
Health is intrinsically related to rural development. Economic
and social inequality and overwork are causes of ill health. Children
and women are specially susceptible to illness due to poor nourishment
and overwork in the looms. CREDA has been slowly focussing on
raising health as an important issue amongst the villagers to
support its programmes. This is done through a combination of
education in schools and organising health melas where free check
ups are offered.
Midday Meals
Midday
meals are provided to all school children as part of their
all round development. Mothers are requested to contribute vegetables
and other food items. Children are also made aware of the importance
safe drinking water and personal hygiene.
Immunisation
Pulse Polio Campaign: In 2002 CREDA staff and volunteers facilitated
Pulse
Polio eradication campaign. A total of 23476 children were
administered Pulse Polio drops in the project area.
Health Training
Rural women health workers are trained on First Aid and Reproductive
Health. They also provide support to the people as per requirements.
They help impart knowledge on motherhood and childcare to the
women of the villages.
Old Age
CREDA received support from Help Age India to set up a health
centre and a medical outreach programme for the aged. Under
this programme a medical centre was set up in Sukhra village
in Hallia Block. As part of this programme para medics were
trained. CREDA also purchased an ambulance to facilitate the
programme.
Village level campaigns for "Clean Village"
Trained health workers and Members of SHGs persuade the community
in project villages to keep themselves, their children, and
their surroundings neat and tidy in a drive against killer diseases.
Health Camps and Health Melas
Health
check-up programmes are organised through village health
camps with participation of doctor, health workers and project
staff.
These health fairs help in reaching out to the villagers with
basic health care from which they can benefit.
- Medicine like vitamins, iron and calcium pills are distributed
to patients free of cost.
- Exhibitions are organised to educate the community of the
benefits of traditional herbs and medicinal plants.
- Pamphlets, posters, role-plays and songs are used as medium
to educate people about safe drinking water, personal health
and hygiene.
- Mothers' groups are informed on women's health issues, nutrition,
contraceptives and traditional remedies.
- Patients with chronic diseases are referred to District Hospital,
Mirzapur and BHU hospital, Varanasi.
